Home Education

I have been a home educator for the past 8 years. Ever since my children were born I knew that I wanted to take primary responsibility for their early educational journey. I strongly believe that, for those who are so inclined, home education represents an extremely valuable alternative to traditional public and private schooling. And as a homeschool mom, I am motivated by the desire to provide my children with the type of well-rounded education that is sometimes lacking in other schooling spaces. In our homeschool I endeavor to provide my children with the type of intellectual, creative, cultural, and character education that will give them the tools necessary to become the best possible versions of themselves as well as valuable members of their local and global communities.

Our Homeschool Vision

In our homeschool we strive to master basic skills like reading, math, literacy and critical thinking through regular, consistent practice. We also aim to regularly practice and develop a wide variety of other skills that they enjoy and that will be necessary for them to build and maintain their desired lifestyles as adults.

In our homeschool we value critical thinking as a necessary tool for understanding and properly engaging the world and its complexities. We sharpen our critical thinking skills by routinely asking questions about all the things we read and encounter. In our question-asking we aim to explore multiple perspectives and to probe beyond surface understandings and appearances. We always try to think outside the box.

In our homeschool we refuse to let table-learning rob us of the opportunity to get out and experience the world. We will value and embrace all types of learning, not just through pen and paper. Homeschooling lends us an amazing opportunity to be in the world and learn from it. This is an opportunity that we will maximize to the fullest.

In our homeschool we regularly learn about African, African American and African Diaspora history and culture. We participate in that culture in myriad forms whenever possible.

In our homeschool we regularly engage in readings, lessons and discussions that intentionally explore what it means to be members of a larger community, that affirm them as unique individuals within their communities, and that help build character. We also participate in volunteer and other service opportunities as much as possible.

In our homeschool we participate in activities that encourage them to work as part of a team as well as those that nurture their independence. We continuously embrace a growth mindset, view mistakes as a natural and necessary part of the learning process, and always intentionally try to learn from them.

In our homeschool we strive to make learning fun and to learn about what interests and excites them. We refuse to be dictated by man-made timelines and we allow each of them to work toward maximizing their individual potential and ability without being hampered by artificial constraints.

In our homeschool we never settle for less than our best!

My specific services primarily involve assisting parents and facilitators with goal assessment, curriculum design and instructional strategies.
